Ms. Albright's Gentle Nudge
Ms. Albright, the music teacher, observes Eleanor's isolation. She sees a spark of potential, a talent waiting to be unleashed beyond passive listening.
Ms. Albright’s classroom was a haven of organised chaos, a delightful jumble of instruments, sheet music, and the faint, lingering scent of polish and creativity. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like tiny, silent notes. Eleanor sat at the very back, her headphones clamped firmly over her ears, the familiar hum of an alien world a comforting blanket against the soft murmur of her classmates tuning their instruments. She was a ghost in their midst, present in body but lost in a galaxy of sound.
Ms. Albright, a woman with kind eyes that missed nothing and a smile that could coax a melody from a stone, paused in her rounds. She had a knack for observing, for seeing the hidden currents beneath the surface of things. She saw Eleanor, as always, adrift. She saw the way Eleanor’s fingers tapped out rhythms that no one else could hear, the way her eyes glazed over when someone tried to speak to her, the way her shoulders seemed to hunch a little tighter, as if trying to disappear into the fabric of her oversized sweater.
“Eleanor,” Ms. Albright’s voice, a low, melodic alto, cut through the ambient music, though Eleanor barely registered it. “Could you perhaps lend me a hand with these violins?”
