The world outside Eleanor’s headphones began to sound like a distant, muffled hum, a sound so faint it was barely there. Her room, once a cozy haven, now felt like a waiting room for the next sonic adventure. Sunlight, which used to paint dancing patterns on her rug, was now just a pale wash of light she barely registered. Her mother’s voice calling her for dinner sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a well, each word a tiny pebble dropped into an endless dark. "Eleanor! Dinner!" She let the phone buzz. And buzz. And buzz again. Each vibration was a tiny tug on her attention, a whisper of the life she was actively choosing to ignore. A knock, sharp and distinct, at her bedroom door made her jump, the sudden intrusion jarring her from her reverie. Her mother stood there, a frown etched between her eyebrows. "Eleanor, Leo is at the door. He said you were going to the park?"
