The worn velvet of the headphones felt familiar, a soft cradle for Eleanor’s ears, but something had shifted. The usual vibrant rush of sound, the immediate transport to glittering oceans or star-dusted nebulae, felt… muted. It was as if the magic, once so potent, had begun to fray at the edges. Today, the music didn't beckon her away; it seemed to hum a little closer to home, a gentle reminder of the world she'd been so eager to leave behind.
She sat on her bedroom floor, a half-finished drawing of a dragon abandoned on her desk. Usually, the headphones would have been on the moment she’d finished her chores, her gateway to a thousand adventures. But lately, the thought of those adventures felt less like an escape and more like a beautiful, shimmering cage. A hesitant knock sounded at her door. Eleanor flinched, pulling off the headphones as if caught doing something she shouldn’t. “Come in,” she called, her voice a little shaky.
