The cacophony of chatter and the rhythmic thud of feet on the linoleum floor of the school gymnasium were a far cry from the silent, shimmering landscapes Eleanor had grown accustomed to. Here, the air vibrated with a different kind of magic, a raw, unpolished energy that was both exhilarating and a little terrifying. She clutched the worn strap of her backpack, her knuckles white, a nervous flutter in her chest. It had been weeks since she’d last worn the headphones, weeks since she’d let the music cocoon her away from the bustling, messy world. Now, standing at the edge of this vibrant chaos, she wondered if she’d made the right choice.

A booming laugh, familiar and warm, cut through the din. Leo, his bright red sneakers a blur as he bounced a basketball, grinned at her from across the gym. He’d been the one, after all, who’d coaxed her into this. “Eleanor! You made it!” he called, dribbling the ball with a flourish before catching it and jogging over. “Thought you might have gotten lost in a particularly epic guitar solo on the way.”

Eleanor managed a small smile, though her heart still felt like a trapped bird. “Something like that,” she admitted, her voice barely a whisper against the surrounding noise.
