Chapter 12
Tentative Harmony
The first club meeting is awkward. Eleanor is shy, but the shared passion for music slowly begins to weave a delicate thread of connection.
Eleanor’s heart thumped a nervous rhythm against her ribs, a frantic counterpoint to the gentle hum of the fluorescent lights in the empty music room. She clutched her backpack strap so tightly her knuckles were white. This was it. The first meeting of the “Beat Club,” as she’d tentatively christened it. She’d written the name on a hastily drawn poster, her handwriting a little shaky, and taped it outside the classroom door. Now, the door was propped open, a beacon of hesitant possibility, and the room was… empty. Except for her.
She’d arrived twenty minutes early, a testament to her anxiety. The music room, usually a vibrant space filled with the cheerful cacophony of instruments and Ms. Albright’s encouraging calls, felt cavernous and silent. Guitars hung on the walls like colourful, silent birds. It was a room of potential music, but right now, it was just a room, and Eleanor felt utterly exposed.
She fiddled with the strap of her headphones, which were tucked safely away in her backpack. The headphones. The very reason she’d even considered this. They had opened worlds for her, vast and shimmering, filled with melodies that made her feel understood, transported. But they had also built walls, thick and soundproof, between her and everyone else. Now, standing here, waiting for people she barely knew to join her for a club *she* had started, the walls felt impossibly high.
