Chapter 10
A Seed of an Idea
Inspired by a fleeting memory of shared laughter and a desire for something more, Eleanor conceives of a way to bring music into the light.
The silence in Eleanor’s room was a familiar blanket, soft and worn. For weeks, it had been the only sound she truly welcomed, a quiet canvas for the vibrant worlds that bloomed inside her headphones. But today, the silence felt… different. It had a hollow ring, a faint tremor of something missing. She was tracing the worn velvet of her headphones, the cool plastic a comfort against her fingertips, when a memory, unbidden, flickered at the edge of her mind. It was a bright, sun-drenched afternoon, the kind that smelled of cut grass and summer popsicles. She was younger, much younger, her laughter bubbling up, unrestrained, as Leo, his face smeared with chocolate, chased her around the old oak tree in her backyard. They’d been singing a silly song, a made-up tune about a runaway kite, their voices a clumsy, joyous duet.
The memory was so vivid, so *real*, it made the quiet room feel suddenly small. The music that usually filled her ears, the majestic orchestras, the soaring vocals, the intricate melodies that whisked her away to glittering ballrooms and fantastical lands, suddenly felt a little… distant. They were magnificent, yes, but they were also solitary. Like a beautiful painting viewed behind a thick pane of glass, admired but never truly touched.
She pulled off the headphones, letting them rest on her lap. The ordinary sounds of her house – the ticking clock, the distant hum of traffic, the gentle creak of the floorboards – rushed in, a little startling at first, then oddly grounding. She looked around her room, at the posters of faraway landscapes, at the stack of unread books, at the drawing pad filled with sketches of fantastical creatures that had sprung from her sonic adventures. It was a world built on sound, a world she had meticulously constructed to keep the real one at bay.
