Chapter 17
The silence in Jonas’s small apartment felt heavier than usual, a tangible weight pressing down on him. He’d turned off the Dubajus app, the glowing screen of his phone now a dark, accusing mirror. The initial rush of relief that had washed over him after Anya’s words, after the decision to stop, had begun to recede, leaving behind the stark, cold reality of what he had done. The money that had flowed so effortlessly, so miraculously, was gone, or rather, it had never truly been his to begin with. It was a phantom limb, a ghost of wealth that now left an ache where it had once promised so much.
He traced the worn patterns of the rug with his toe, his mind replaying Anya’s calm, steady voice. "It is never too late to mend, Jonas. He was facing consequences, a word that had loomed like a storm cloud for weeks, and now the rain had begun to fall.
