Jonas sat by the window, the grey sky mirroring the turmoil in his chest. The cheerful glow of the Dubajus app on his phone screen felt like a cruel joke now. Each notification of a successful withdrawal, once a cause for elation, now brought a knot of dread. He’d been so focused on the numbers climbing, on the illusion of effortless wealth, that he’d pushed away the nagging questions, the faint unease that had begun to stir in his gut. Now, those questions were no longer faint whispers; they were a deafening roar.

He remembered Elena’s concerned frown, her gentle probing about where all the money was coming from. He’d brushed her off, a little too quickly, a little too defensively. He’d been so afraid of her seeing the cracks in his facade, the truth that was beginning to unravel the carefully constructed image of success.

And that was the problem, wasn't it? It wasn’t honest work. He’d seen the articles Elena had forwarded him, the news reports about online scams, about people losing their life savings. At first, he’d dismissed them as irrelevant, as tales for people less careful, less… lucky than him. But the more he’d used Dubajus, the more the app’s demands had become peculiar, the more the money seemed to materialize from thin air, the more those articles had begun to haunt his thoughts.
