The air crackled with a nervous energy that felt as thick as the Los Angeles summer heat. Today was the day. Competition day. La Shele stood backstage, the familiar scent of polished shoes and nervous sweat filling her nostrils. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a drum solo gone wild. Around her, the Johnny Hi-Steppers were a whirlwind of shimmering sequins and hushed encouragements. Chandelier, her loyal friend, adjusted La Shele’s captain’s sash, her own hands trembling slightly.
“You got this, La Shele,” Chandelier whispered, her voice a little shaky. “We all do.”
La Shele offered a tight smile, trying to project a calmness she didn’t entirely feel. She could see the flicker of doubt in some of the younger girls’ eyes, the same doubt she sometimes wrestled with in the quiet hours of the night. But today, doubt was a luxury they couldn't afford. Today, they had to be iron. They had to be fire.
