Chapter 6
The Spark Within
Looking at the crystal, Flicker understands. His fire wasn't truly lost; it was dormant. The journey, the kindness, the courage – these were the sparks. With newfound confidence, he takes a deep breath. A warm, gentle flame ignites, proving his true strength comes from his heart.
The crystal pulsed with a soft, internal luminescence, a captured star nestled in the mountain’s heart. I stared, my reflection shimmering on its smooth surface, and a strange feeling bloomed in my chest, warm and bright, like a sunrise I’d never seen before. Professor Hoot’s words, “Your fire is not lost, young Flicker, it is merely sleeping,” echoed in my mind, no longer a riddle but a truth. The grumpy troll, Grumble, who had huffed and grumbled but let me pass when I offered him a smooth, shiny pebble, his gruffness melting just a little. The echoing darkness of the crystal caves, where my own footsteps had been the loudest sound, and I hadn't needed a fiery blast to find my way, just a steady beat of my own heart.
It wasn't about breathing flames that scorched the sky, or smoke that billowed like thunderclouds. My fire… it was different. It was the warmth I’d felt when I helped the little lost glow-worm find its way back to its family. It was the courage that had pushed me forward, even when my scales felt cold with fear. It was the quiet understanding that had passed between me and the crystal, a silent acknowledgment of something deep inside.
The crystal wasn't magical because it *gave* power, but because it *showed* power. It reflected me. And in my reflection, I saw not a dragon without fire, but a dragon whose fire was waiting. Waiting for the right moment, the right feeling, the right Flicker to coax it out.
