Elara’s return was not heralded by the clang of armor or the triumphant roar of a vanquished beast. Instead, a hush fell over the village as she emerged from the winding path, her familiar cloak dusted with the unfamiliar shimmer of mountain minerals. She carried no glittering hoard, no dragon’s head to lay at Elder Maeve’s feet. Instead, clutched in her hand was a single, dewy leaf, pulsing with a faint, emerald light.

The villagers, gathered in the central square, their faces etched with the weariness of a long winter, watched her approach with a mixture of hope and apprehension. Children, their bellies hollow, peeked from behind their parents’ legs, their usual boisterous energy subdued. Elder Maeve, her silver hair pulled back in its customary tight bun, stood at the forefront, her gaze sharp and searching. “Elara,” she called, her voice raspy, “What news do you bring from the Whispering Caves?”

Elara’s heart thumped a nervous rhythm against her ribs. She had rehearsed this moment a hundred times in her mind, each scenario ending with a roar of gratitude or a wave of relief. But the reality was far more delicate, far more fragile. She walked towards Elder Maeve, her steps steady despite the tremor in her hands. “I bring news, Elder,” she began, her voice clear but soft, “and a promise.”
