The air in the cavern was thick with a scent Elara couldn't quite place – not the acrid smoke she’d expected, but something earthy and ancient, like moss after a long rain. The sounds of her own breathing seemed impossibly loud, each exhale a puff of defiance against the silence that had swallowed her. She’d walked for what felt like days, through narrow passages that scraped her shoulders and across ledges where a single misstep would have sent her tumbling into the echoing darkness. And now, here she was.

The cavern opened into a vast, domed space. Crystals, embedded in the stone like captured stars, cast a soft, ethereal glow, illuminating a scene far removed from the terrifying dragon of her village’s tales. Before her, curled upon a bed of smooth, grey stones, lay not a monstrous beast, but a creature of breathtaking, melancholic beauty. Scales, the colour of a twilight sky, shimmered with an inner luminescence. Great wings, folded like a king’s cloak, lay still. And the head, resting on its colossal forelegs, was turned towards her, not with fury, but with an immense, weary curiosity.

Two eyes, the colour of molten gold, blinked slowly. They held no malice, only a profound sadness that tugged at something deep within Elara’s chest. She’d expected roars, fire, the earth-shattering fury of an undefeated monster. Instead, she saw a profound loneliness.
