The air in the Rossi mansion was thick with the scent of expensive polish and unspoken anxieties. It was a perfume I’d grown accustomed to, a constant reminder of the gilded cage I inhabited. But lately, a new, acrid note had been added to the mix, one that pricked at my nerves and made my stomach clench. It was the scent of Sarah.

She moved through the opulent rooms like a viper, her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, constantly scanning, judging. Sarah wasn't a blood relation, not in the way I understood it. She was a distant cousin, or some such thing, brought into our fold by a convoluted family tree that seemed designed to ensnare rather than connect. Her presence had always been a low hum of irritation, but since Marco and I had begun to… well, to *be* more, her animosity had sharpened, becoming a palpable force.

Tonight, she was a vision in emerald silk, the color doing nothing to soften the hard lines of her face. She stood by the grand fireplace in the main salon, a crystal glass of amber liquid clutched in her hand as if it were a weapon. Marco was across the room, engaged in a hushed conversation with my father, his back to us. My heart gave a familiar, traitorous lurch at the sight of him. He was so… solid. A stark contrast to the polished, precarious world I was born into.
