The crystal chandelier above the dining room table cast a warm, golden light that did little to dispel the chill clinging to the air. It was a familiar chill, one that had settled into the very bones of this house, a constant companion to the opulence. Tonight, it felt more pronounced, a silent observer to the carefully orchestrated performance that was dinner. My father, the Don, sat at the head of the table, his presence a monolith that commanded respect and a healthy dose of fear. Across from him, my mother, Sofia, her posture impeccable, her smile a practiced curve of her lips. Her eyes, however, were rarely still, flitting from face to face, absorbing everything, betraying nothing.

The conversation flowed around me, a stilted ballet of pleasantries and veiled threats. My father spoke of a business deal, his voice a low rumble that vibrated with an authority that had been honed over decades of command. My mother offered a quiet assent, her words like polished stones, smooth and unyielding. I picked at my food, the rich flavors of the pasta tasting like ash in my mouth. My gaze drifted to Marco, seated to my right, his usual easy smile absent. A subtle tension coiled in his shoulders, a stillness that mirrored my own unease. He caught my eye, and a flicker of something – concern? – passed between us before he looked away, his jaw tightening.

"Bella, darling," my mother's voice, silken and smooth, cut through the dull murmur. "You've barely touched your food. Are you feeling unwell?"
