The air in the Rossi mansion had always been thick with unspoken things, a heady perfume of old money, expensive cigars, and the low hum of surveillance. I’d grown up breathing it in, mistaking it for normalcy. But lately, the scent had soured, tinged with something metallic and sharp, like fear. Marco’s revelation had hung in the air between us for days, a shroud that refused to lift. His past, a landscape I’d never been allowed to explore, was now bleeding into the present, staining everything with a dangerous crimson.
“You’re quiet, Bella,” Marco’s voice, usually a warm balm, was strained as we sat by the fountain in the overgrown gardens, the twilight painting the marble statues in shades of bruised plum. The air was heavy with the scent of night-blooming jasmine, a sweetness that felt almost mocking.
I traced the rim of my water glass, the condensation cool against my fingertips. “Just thinking.”
