The scent of expensive lilies, usually a comforting perfume that clung to the opulent halls of the Rossi mansion, turned cloying, thick with an unspoken dread. It was a Saturday, a day usually reserved for quiet afternoons in the rose garden or hushed conversations over espresso. But the air crackled with a different kind of energy today, a static charge that prickled the skin and set my teeth on edge. Marco had been unusually quiet all morning, his usual easy banter replaced by a watchful stillness that mirrored the unease settling in my own chest.

We were in the study, a room that always smelled of old leather and secrets, the kind of secrets that were as much a part of the Rossi name as the crest etched into the heavy oak door. Sunlight, usually a benevolent presence filtering through the leaded glass, seemed to cast long, distorted shadows today, twisting familiar objects into menacing shapes. Marco sat across from me, ostensibly going over some old family ledgers, his brow furrowed in a way that suggested more than just numbers.

“Something’s wrong, Marco,” I said, my voice barely a whisper, as if speaking too loudly might shatter the fragile peace.
