The air in the Rossi mansion had always been thick with an unspoken tension, a palpable hum of secrets that settled in the velvet drapes and echoed in the polished marble halls. But tonight, that tension had snapped, replaced by the sharp, metallic tang of fear. Sirens wailed in the distance, a discordant symphony against the opulent silence that had fallen over the house. My father, the Don, stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back to me, a monolith against the flickering city lights. His shoulders, usually so broad and unyielding, seemed to sag under an invisible weight.
“They’re gone,” he said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the room. Not gone in the sense of leaving for the night, but gone in the way people disappear when the shadows decide to claim them. Uncle Carmine, his consigliere, and a handful of trusted men. Wiped out. Not a word, not a struggle heard. Just… gone.
My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. This wasn't a whispered threat or a distant rumble of war. This was here. Now. The carefully constructed facade of my life, the gilded cage I’d learned to live within, had just been shattered.
