The crimson velvet of the chaise lounge felt cool against my skin, a stark contrast to the simmering unease that had taken root within me. Outside, the city lights of New York bled into the inky sky, a familiar tapestry of ambition and shadow. But tonight, the opulence of our penthouse felt less like a sanctuary and more like a gilded cage. Mama, Sofia, sat opposite me, her porcelain composure a mask I’d long since learned to decipher. Her hands, usually clasped with an almost regal stillness, were tracing the intricate embroidery on her silk robe. The silence between us stretched, thick with unspoken words, heavy with the weight of our shared blood and the secrets it carried.
"You seem troubled, carissima," she finally said, her voice a low murmur, like the rustle of autumn leaves. It was a rare observation from her, a crack in the polished facade she presented to the world, and to me. Usually, her concern was reserved for the proper cut of a gown or the guest list for a soirée. Tonight, it felt different. More… real.
I offered a weak smile, trying to brush away the tendrils of anxiety. "Just tired, Mama. Long day." It was a lie. The "long day" had been a kaleidoscope of hushed conversations in shadowed corners, the unsettling glint in Uncle Enzo’s eyes, and the phantom chill of fear that had clung to me since the incident at the docks.
