The air in my father’s study was thick with the scent of aged leather and cigar smoke, a familiar perfume that usually settled my nerves. Tonight, it felt suffocating. Don Rossi, my father, sat behind his imposing mahogany desk, his face a mask of stone, the only movement the slow, deliberate tap of his fingers against the polished wood. He hadn’t looked at me directly since I’d entered, his gaze fixed on some unseen point beyond the ornate window that overlooked the city’s glittering expanse.

“You wanted to see me, Papa?” My voice, usually steady, trembled slightly. The summons had come without explanation, a curt message delivered by a silent man in a sharp suit.

He finally lifted his eyes, and they were like chips of obsidian, cold and assessing. “Bella. Sit.” He gestured to a leather armchair opposite him, a throne for lesser mortals. I obeyed, sinking into its plush depths, the silence stretching between us like a taut wire.
