The air in the old warehouse hung thick with the scent of stale oil and something metallic, something that always made the hairs on my arms prickle. It wasn’t the usual city grime; this was the smell of secrets, of things best left undisturbed. Marco had brought me here, not with a question, but with a grim certainty that had been building for weeks. His eyes, usually so warm and full of a shared history, were now shards of ice, reflecting the dim glow of the single bare bulb overhead.
“You shouldn’t be here, Bella,” he’d said, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate against the damp concrete walls. He’d steered me into a shadowed alcove, his hand firm on my arm, but his gaze was already elsewhere, fixed on a figure emerging from the deeper gloom.
He was older, this man, his face a roadmap of hard living. Lines etched around his eyes spoke of sleepless nights and decisions made in shadows. He wore a worn leather jacket, the kind that had seen more than its fair share of action. There was a stillness about him, a coiled tension that spoke of danger held in check. Marco stood between us, a silent sentinel, his posture radiating a protectiveness that did little to ease the knot of unease in my stomach.
