The air in the Rossi mansion always felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the scent of expensive polish. Tonight, however, it was laced with something colder, sharper – fear. I’d seen it in my father’s eyes, a flicker of something raw and unguarded that he usually kept buried beneath layers of stone. It was the aftermath, the brutal, undeniable consequence of a trust shattered, a loyalty misplaced.

It had happened swiftly, a brutal punctuation mark at the end of a tense dinner. Uncle Vincenzo, his face usually a roadmap of jovial wrinkles, had been pale, his hands trembling as he’d pushed away his plate. Then, the guards. Not the usual stoic, watchful presence, but a frantic, almost panicked urgency that had sent a chill down my spine. They’d dragged out Salvatore, my father’s most trusted lieutenant, his face a mask of disbelief and terror. The accusation, spat out by my father in a voice that scraped like gravel, had been simple and devastating: betrayal.

Now, the silence in the grand hall was a heavy shroud. My mother, Sofia, sat stiffly on the velvet divan, her perfect posture a testament to years of practiced composure, but her knuckles were white where she clutched her pearl necklace. Even she, with her uncanny ability to navigate the treacherous currents of our family, seemed shaken. Don Rossi, my father, paced the length of the room, his heavy footsteps echoing the turmoil churning within him.
