The air in the Rossi mansion had always been thick, heavy with unspoken rules and the scent of expensive cigars. But lately, it felt suffocating, each breath a labor. My father, the Don, was a man carved from granite and shadows. His pronouncements were law, his silences more potent than any threat. Yet, even he seemed to be wrestling with unseen forces. He’d been more withdrawn than usual, his eyes, usually sharp and assessing, now held a distant, troubled flicker. He’d spend hours in his study, the heavy mahogany door a barrier between his inner turmoil and the hushed world outside. I’d catch glimpses of him through the partially open door, hunched over documents, his brow furrowed in a way that spoke of more than just business.

Marco, my anchor in this swirling chaos, noticed it too. His presence was a constant, a warm counterpoint to the icy formality of my family. We’d grown up together, our lives intertwined like the ivy that climbed the mansion’s ancient stone walls. He knew my silences, my fleeting glances, the way my heart hammered against my ribs when certain topics arose. He was the only one I could truly talk to, the only one who saw beyond the carefully constructed façade of Isabella Rossi, daughter of the Don.
