The air in the Rossi mansion always felt thick, heavy with the scent of old money, expensive perfume, and something else – something metallic and sharp that I’d learned to associate with danger. Tonight, though, it was different. It was laced with a tension so palpable it hummed beneath my skin, a discordant note in the usual symphony of hushed conversations and clinking crystal. Marco was supposed to be here, ostensibly to discuss some trivial matter about a business venture my father was considering, but we both knew the real reason. The incident. It was a polite euphemism for the night Uncle Carmine’s world had imploded, leaving behind a crater of shattered trust and a chilling silence where his booming laughter used to be. The whispers that followed were a venomous tide, licking at the edges of our carefully constructed world, threatening to drag us all under. My father, the Don, had been a rock of granite through it all, his face an unreadable mask, his pronouncements delivered with an icy finality. But even granite could crack, and I’d seen the faint tremor in his hand as he’d signed a document, the almost imperceptible tightening around his eyes.

Marco’s presence was a constant, a gravitational pull in the swirling chaos.
