The woods were alive with a silence that felt louder than any sound. It was the kind of quiet that pressed in, a thick blanket woven from the rustle of unseen things and the anticipation of something new. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat urging me forward. The reporter’s words echoed in my head, a warning that had only fanned the flames of my curiosity: “cute but dangerous,” “screen hurt,” “pink eye and throw up.” But I’d seen the blurry images, the fleeting glimpses of something impossibly pink and graceful, and I knew I had to see it for myself, truly see it, not just through the distorted lens of fear.

I’d spent days preparing, poring over old books in the dusty library, searching for any mention of creatures with unusual abilities. Nothing. It was as if Kelly had sprung from the very air, a vibrant splash of color against the muted greens and browns of our world. It was a bizarre, disorienting sensation, like looking at the world through a thick, smudged pane of glass. Words on my notepad blurred into meaningless squiggles, and the vibrant forest scene dissolved into a hazy, washed-out panorama. I’d stumbled back, my head throbbing, a wave of nausea washing over me. It was exactly as the reporter had described, and for a moment, the fear threatened to win. I sat on a mossy log, my breath coming in ragged gasps, the pink fur of a distant Kelly-like creature appearing as a blinding white smudge.
