The air in Whispering Woods grew thick with an unspoken tension, a hum that vibrated just beneath the rustle of leaves and the chirping of unseen birds. It was a feeling, a subtle shift in the familiar symphony of the forest that prickled the hairs on my arms. I’d followed the faint, almost imperceptible trail of shimmering pink dust for what felt like hours, my heart thrumming a wild rhythm against my ribs. The reporter’s words, that shrill announcement about the “cute but dangerous” Kelly, echoed in my mind, a siren song of mystery I couldn't ignore.
I’d learned quickly that getting too close to the rumors was like wading into a thick fog. The closer I got to the heart of the whispers, the more my vision swam, the edges of my sight blurring as if I were staring directly into a blinding spotlight. A dull ache began to throb behind my eyes, a phantom sensation of words dissolving into a white void. Peeking through a thicket of ancient ferns, their fronds unfurling like emerald lace, I finally saw it. Not one, but three. They were undeniably fox-like, their bodies slender and graceful, their fur a breathtaking shade of rose-pink, like the blush on a sunrise sky. They moved with a delicate, almost ethereal grace, their paws barely disturbing the mossy ground. One, a little smaller than the others, was grooming its tail, its movements fluid and unhurried.
