Chapter 15
The Sanctuary Project
Inspired by Lucy, a small group forms to create a protected area for Kelly. They install subtle barriers and educational signs, promoting respectful observation rather than intrusive contact.
The air in the clearing hummed with a new kind of energy, a quiet determination that settled over our little group like a gentle morning mist. It had been days since Elder Elara had shared her stories, days since I’d seen the faint shimmer of Kelly’s fur disappear into the deepest shadows of the Whispering Woods. The fear that had once prickled my skin when I thought of the ‘screen hurt’ had faded, replaced by a fierce, protective warmth. Kelly wasn’t a monster; it was a wonder, and wonders deserved to be safe.

I nodded, a smile spreading across my face. “We are. It’s not about fencing them in, Leo. It’s about showing people how to be around them, how to appreciate them without… well, without getting hurt.” I remembered my own brief, disorienting bout with the ‘screen hurt’ when I’d tried to get too close to that first Kelly. It had been like looking at a blinding white light, erasing everything else. But now, knowing it was a defense, a way of saying ‘stay back, I’m not ready,’ made it seem less terrifying and more… understandable.
