The town square buzzed with a nervous energy, a frantic hum that had settled in like a persistent fog since the reporter’s broadcast. But for me, Lucy, it was a different kind of buzz, a thrumming in my own veins that felt more like excitement than fear. I clutched my worn notebook, its pages filled with my own observations, my own truths, and I knew it was time. Time to tell the real story of Kelly.

I stood on the makeshift stage, the same one where the mayor usually gave his speeches about town fairs and prize-winning pumpkins. Today, it felt like a launching pad for something much bigger. A hush fell over the crowd, their faces a mixture of curiosity and that lingering apprehension. I could see it in their eyes, the echo of the reporter’s dramatic pronouncements: "screen hurt," "pink eye," "throw up." They expected a monster, a menace with fluffy pink fur.

"Hello everyone," I began, my voice a little shaky at first, but gaining strength with each word. "You’ve heard the news. You’ve heard about Kelly. The reporter called it a new animal, a creature with pink fur, like a fox, and said it was dangerous." I paused, letting the familiar fear wash over their faces. "And yes, Kelly is new. And yes, Kelly is pink and beautiful. But dangerous? That’s where the story got twisted."
