The air in Elder Elara’s small, sun-dappled cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and something else… something earthy and ancient. Sunlight streamed through the single window, illuminating dust motes dancing like tiny spirits. I sat cross-legged on a woven rug, my heart a hummingbird in my chest, waiting. Elder Elara, her face a roadmap of kind wrinkles and her eyes the color of a deep forest pool, moved with a quiet grace that made even the simplest action feel profound. She was adding a pinch of shimmering powder to a steaming mug, the aroma of which was both comforting and strangely invigorating.

“You have seen them, child,” Elder Elara said, her voice a gentle murmur, like wind chimes in a soft breeze. She handed me the mug. “You have seen the Kellys.”

I nodded, taking a tentative sip. The liquid was warm, tasting of wildflowers and a hint of spice. It settled in my stomach, a soothing balm after the anxieties of the past few days. “I have. And… and I think the reporter, he didn’t understand. They’re not… they’re not mean.”
