Chapter 7
A Flicker of Doubt, A Moment of Fear
There were days when the bat felt heavy, the ball a blur. The secret doubts gnawed at me. This chapter delves into those moments of vulnerability, the internal struggle to silence the voice that whispered I wasn't good enough.
The roar of the crowd, it’s a drug, isn't it? It pulls you in, lifts you up, makes you feel like you can levitate. For a long time, that roar was the only sound that mattered, the only validation I craved. But there are other sounds, quieter ones, that creep in when the stadium lights dim and the adrenaline fades. The sound of my own breathing, ragged and uncertain in the dead of night. The whisper of doubt, insidious and relentless.
There were days, and they came more often than I cared to admit, when the bat felt like a lead pipe, impossibly heavy in my grip. The ball, once a clear, white orb sailing towards me, became a frantic blur, each delivery a question I couldn’t answer. It was a peculiar kind of torment, this disconnect between the player everyone saw, the prodigy, the rising star, and the man inside, wrestling with a growing unease.
Coach Sharma, bless his gruff, strategic heart, saw the outward signs. He’d watch me during practice, his eyes, sharp as any hawk’s, scanning my stance, my swing, the way I held the willow. “Shuvanjan,” he’d bark, his voice cutting through the midday heat, “your feet are like anchors today. Shake them loose. The ball isn’t going to wait for you to wake up.” I’d nod, a grimace I hoped he mistook for concentration. He’d push me harder, drills that felt like they were designed to break me down, to rebuild me from the ground up. And usually, that was exactly what I needed. But on those darker days, even his sternest admonishment felt like a confirmation of my own inner turmoil. He saw the technical flaws, the lapses in concentration, but he couldn’t see the gnawing fear that was starting to take root.
