The air in my study, usually alive with the phantom roar of crowds and the crisp crack of leather on willow, felt unusually still. Dust motes danced in the late afternoon sunbeams, illuminating the worn leather of my old cricket bag, a silent sentinel in the corner. It felt like yesterday I was a gangly boy, dreaming of this very room, of the accolades and the roar of the crowd. Now, the roar had softened to a murmur, a gentle echo in the chambers of memory. The sheer terror of walking out to bat, the weight of a nation’s hopes pressing down on my young shoulders. I could still feel the heat of the sun on my face, the nervous tremor in my hands as I gripped the willow. And then, that first boundary, a glorious cover drive that sent the crowd into a frenzy. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, a confirmation that I belonged, that this was my destiny.
