The stench of stale urine and decay clung to Chris like a second skin. It was a familiar perfume, one he’d worn for years, yet tonight it felt heavier, thicker. He’d been eighteen for a month, a milestone that felt less like a celebration and more like another marker on a road he hadn’t chosen. The cold seeped through his threadbare jacket, a constant reminder of his precarious existence. He’d just found another one. Chris had seen enough bodies to fill a graveyard, but this one was different. There was a stillness about the man, a finality that resonated deep within Chris’s own hollowed-out core.
