Chapter 8
An Alleyway Discovery
Eighteen-year-old Chris, hardened and grieving, finds a dead junkie in an alley. Instead of walking away, he searches the man's pockets, a desperate act born of survival.
Eighteen years. It felt like a lifetime, and in many ways, it was. The boy who’d been tossed onto the unforgiving concrete of the city streets at fifteen was gone, replaced by something harder, something sharper, something that moved through the shadows with a practiced, weary grace. Chris Dozier, or what was left of him, was a ghost haunting the edges of a world that had tried its best to swallow him whole. Grief was a dull ache now, a constant companion that had long since stopped screaming and settled into a low, persistent hum beneath the surface of his skin. He was looking for nothing in particular, just moving, letting the rhythm of the urban night carry him, a solitary figure against the indifferent glow of streetlights.
He turned a corner, the narrow passage choked with overflowing dumpsters and the acrid stench of decay. The air hung heavy and still, thick with the cloying sweetness of cheap liquor and something else… something metallic and sharp. His senses, always on high alert, prickled. He slowed his pace, his eyes scanning the gloom.
