Chris finds Maya's lifeless body in an abandoned squat after a desperate search. The scene is staged as an overdose, but Chris notices subtle signs of foul play.

The city exhaled a cold, damp breath that clung to Chris’s skin like a shroud. Three days. Three agonizing, endless days since he’d last seen Maya’s face, heard her infectious laugh, or felt the desperate, fragile hope she ignited in him. Every shadow seemed to mock him, every alleyway whispered her name with a cruel, indifferent echo. He’d scoured the usual haunts, the grimy corners where the desperate congregated, his stomach a knot of ice and dread. The cold seeped deeper than the biting wind, chilling him from the inside out.

He was no stranger to the city’s underbelly, to the places where life shed its skin and became something raw, something broken. But tonight, the familiar grime felt alien, hostile. He’d followed a thread, a whisper from a gaunt-eyed dealer who’d seen Maya heading towards the old abandoned warehouse district, a place even the hardened usually avoided. It was a skeletal graveyard of industry, its brick bones picked clean by time and neglect.

The warehouse loomed ahead, a hulking silhouette against the bruised twilight sky. Its windows were vacant eyes, staring out at nothing. A broken chain dangled from its massive doors, a pathetic invitation. Chris pushed it open, the screech of rusted metal a tortured cry that sliced through the silence. The air inside was thick with the stench of decay, of stagnant water and something metallic, something sickly sweet that turned his stomach.
