The email landed in his inbox like a gilded invitation, stark against the utilitarian blue of his company’s internal portal. “Congratulations, Marcus.” Chris read the subject line again, a tremor of disbelief skittering through him. He’d been waiting for the quarterly reviews, bracing for the usual metrics, the quiet acknowledgment of his competence. This was something else entirely.
He clicked it open, his heart thudding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. “Following your exceptional performance as Logistics Manager for the past two years, we are pleased to offer you the position of Regional Director, effective immediately.” The words swam before his eyes, a dizzying cascade of corporate success. Regional Director. It was a title he’d only dared to whisper in the darkest corners of his mind, a peak so far removed from the grimy streets he’d clawed his way out of, it had felt like a fantasy.
Then came the paragraphs detailing the responsibilities, the scope of the role, the travel, the team he would oversee. And then, the sentence that made the blood drain from his face: “As part of the onboarding process for this senior leadership position, a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted.”
