He’d seen Chris’s raw potential, the way his eyes devoured spreadsheets, the uncanny speed with which he could reconcile discrepancies that left others scratching their heads. He’d taken Chris under his wing, a gruff, paternalistic gesture that felt both alien and strangely comforting.

Chris pushed his glasses up his nose, the thin frames a stark contrast to the haunted eyes that had once scanned alleyways for threats. “Just finishing them up, Dave. Double-checking the freight weights against the estimated loads.” His voice was measured, a practiced cadence honed by countless hours of listening to his colleagues, mimicking their inflections, their pauses. He’d learned the language of this new world, the jargon of logistics, the subtle art of corporate politeness.
