Chapter 13
Leaving the Shadows
Chris cuts all ties to his past, leaving the drug trade behind. He lands an entry-level job in warehouse logistics, where his street-honed skills quickly impress.
The grimy concrete of the alley seemed to cling to him, a phantom residue of the life he was shedding. Chris Dozier, or rather, the ghost of Chris Dozier, stood at the precipice of something new. The stench of stale urine and desperation that had been his constant companion for years was finally beginning to fade, replaced by the crisp, hopeful air of a new dawn. He’d made the call, a short, clipped conversation that severed the last threads connecting him to the underworld. No goodbyes, no explanations. Just the cold, hard finality of a door slammed shut. He’d told the dealers he was done, that he was moving on. Their disbelief had been palpable, laced with a thinly veiled threat, but Chris had met their stares with a newfound steel in his eyes, a reflection of the resolve hardening within him. He was no longer the scared kid they’d once exploited. He was Marcus Thorne now, and Marcus Thorne didn’t play these games.
The warehouse loomed before him, a monolithic structure of corrugated steel and concrete, dwarfing the skeletal trees that lined the industrial park. It was a far cry from the gilded towers of corporate ambition he’d glimpsed in magazines, but it was a start. It was a legitimate start. He adjusted the collar of his ill-fitting, second-hand work shirt, the fabric rough against his skin, a stark contrast to the worn denim he’d grown accustomed to. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of anticipation and fear. This was it. The legitimate grind.
Inside, the air vibrated with the hum of machinery and the clatter of forklifts. The sheer scale of it all was staggering. Pallets stacked high with boxes stretched as far as the eye could see, a labyrinth of commerce and labor. The smell of cardboard, oil, and sweat filled his nostrils, a strangely comforting scent of honest work. He’d secured the job through a temp agency, a nameless face in a sea of applicants, armed with Marcus Thorne’s forged documentation and a carefully rehearsed backstory. He’d learned to compartmentalize, to build walls around the raw edges of his past, and now, he was ready to build something solid behind them.
