The air in the grand hall of Villa De Santos was thick with the scent of lilies and something else, something metallic and sharp that I couldn't quite place. It clung to the heavy velvet draperies, to the polished marble floors, and most of all, to the suffocating silence that had descended since the news. Patriarch De Santos was gone. The man I’d glimpsed only in carefully curated portraits, a figure of stern authority and undeniable power, was no more.

His absence was a palpable void. It was as if the very foundations of this opulent prison had shifted, and we, the inhabitants, were left to brace for the tremor. Mateo, usually a fortress of composure, moved with a restless energy that belied his outward stillness. His jaw was perpetually tight, his eyes, those storm-cloud grey eyes, seemed to hold a new, unnerving intensity as he navigated the hushed condolences and the even more hushed strategizing that had begun to fill the villa.

I, Isabella Rossi, his wife of convenience, felt like a ghost in my own life. My presence here, a calculated move in a game I was only beginning to understand, suddenly felt more precarious than ever. The patriarch’s death wasn’t just the end of a life; it was the unleashing of something. The carefully constructed façade of De Santos unity, I suspected, was about to crack.
