The air in the De Santos library was thick with the scent of aged paper and polished mahogany, a perfume that clung to me like a second skin since I’d become Mateo’s wife. It was a scent I was beginning to associate with a suffocating kind of power, a legacy that felt less like an inheritance and more like a trap. Tonight, the trap felt particularly sprung. Mateo had summoned me, his voice on the intercom a low rumble that always managed to send a shiver down my spine, a mixture of dread and something else I refused to name.

I smoothed down the front of my silk dress, a design chosen by the De Santos’ impeccably suited stylist, and took a deep breath. My independence, my very sense of self, felt like fragile things I was desperately trying to shield from the relentless tide of this family. I clutched the small, worn leather-bound journal in my pocket, its familiar weight a small anchor in the opulent sea of the De Santos estate. It was my secret, my ambition, a whispered promise to myself that I would not be consumed. But tonight, I wasn’t sure if even that could save me.

Mateo was already there, standing by the grand fireplace, the flames casting dancing shadows across his sharp features. He looked every inch the heir, the king of this gilded kingdom. His eyes, the color of storm clouds, met mine, and for a fleeting second, I saw a flicker of something beyond the icy control that usually resided there. Then it was gone, replaced by the familiar, unnerving intensity.
