It felt more like I was drowning in them. The grand ballroom, where Mateo and I had stood in a tableau of forced union, now felt like a stage set for a tragedy I was compelled to perform.

Mateo. Even the thought of him sent a tremor through me, a disquieting mix of apprehension and a curiosity I fought to suppress.
