The air in Mateo’s study was thick, not with the usual scent of old leather and expensive brandy, but with a tangible tension that seemed to hum beneath the polished mahogany. Rain lashed against the towering windows, each gust of wind a mournful cry against the fortress of De Santos wealth. I sat across from him, the ornate Persian rug a battlefield beneath my feet, each thread a silent witness to the war being waged between us, and within him.

“Silas Thorne is more than just a business rival, Isabella,” Mateo’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of its usual sardonic edge, replaced by a weariness that settled around him like a shroud. His gaze, usually sharp and assessing, was distant, lost in a labyrinth of his own making. “He has… appetites. And he’s found a way to leverage them against us.”

I clutched the arms of the velvet armchair, the plush fabric doing little to soothe the knot of unease tightening in my stomach. “Leverage how? What does he want?”
