The air in the secluded library, usually a sanctuary of hushed reverence and the comforting scent of aged paper, felt thick, almost suffocating. Anya Petrova stood by the towering mahogany shelves, her back to me, silhouetted against the muted afternoon light filtering through the stained-glass windows. She hadn’t turned around since I’d entered, the silence between us stretching, taut and heavy, like a pulled bowstring. I’d found her here, as I often did when a particular unease settled in my gut. Anya was a constant, a quiet fixture in the De Santos orbit, her loyalty a bedrock I was only beginning to comprehend.

“You seem troubled, Anya,” I finally ventured, my voice barely a whisper, afraid to shatter the fragile peace.

She inclined her head, a slow, deliberate movement. “Trouble is the De Santos birthright, Isabella.” Her voice, when it came, was low and resonant, carrying the weight of unspoken histories. She finally turned, her eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, met mine. There was a depth there, a weariness that spoke of witnessing too much, too often.
