The air in the conservatory was thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine, a heady perfume that usually soothed me, but tonight it felt cloying, suffocating. I traced the cool condensation on the glass, the vast expanse of the De Santos estate spread out below like a kingdom I’d been unwillingly annexed into. Silas Thorne’s words still echoed in my mind, a silken poison seeping into the carefully constructed walls I’d built around my heart. He’d found me here, ostensibly to offer condolences on the recent upheaval within the family, a veiled reference to the patriarch’s sudden decline. But his “condolences” had been a masterclass in subtle insinuation. “A marriage of convenience, they call it, my dear Isabella,” he’d murmured, his eyes, the color of aged whiskey, glinting with a shared understanding that felt far too intimate. “But the De Santos are rarely content with mere convenience. They crave… ownership.”

I’d tried to dismiss him, to retreat behind the cool facade I’d perfected since arriving at this gilded prison. But he’d pressed on, his voice a low hum that vibrated with an unsettling charm. “Mateo, bless his dedicated heart, is a product of this family. He understands the necessity of… sacrifices. For the legacy. For the name.” He’d leaned closer, his breath carrying a faint, pleasant hint of expensive brandy. “And sometimes, the greatest sacrifices are made by those who believe they are merely observers. Those who are brought in, not by choice, but by arrangement.”
