The acrid smell of ozone and burning metal was the first thing that hit me, a nauseating perfume that clung to the air like a shroud. It was a far cry from the sweet, earthy scent of the forest, the scent that had been our sanctuary for so long. Daisy. Even now, her name was a whisper on my lips, a phantom ache in my chest. We’d been so young, so sure that our powers, our dreams, were enough to carve a path of heroism through the world. We were wrong. War, it turned out, was a hungry beast, and it devoured innocence like kindling.
Our first real taste of it, the kind that leaves you with tremors long after the echoes fade, came not with a bang, but with a desperate scramble. We’d been assigned to a scouting mission, a supposedly quiet sector on the eastern front. The Elder Hero, a man whose eyes held the weariness of a thousand battles, had warned us, his voice a low rumble of caution. "The enemy is cunning, girls. They don't fight fair. Stick together. Trust your instincts, but trust each other more." We’d nodded, brimming with a naive courage that now felt like a cruel joke.
The quiet sector was a lie. We stumbled into an ambush, a hail of energy blasts and twisted metal raining down on us. My lightning crackled, a desperate shield against the onslaught, but it was Daisy’s quick thinking, her ability to weave a wall of thorny vines from the very earth, that saved us from being overwhelmed. The forest, our friend, became our battlefield. Trees splintered, their leafy crowns ripped apart by explosions. The ground, usually so yielding and welcoming, spat fire and debris.
