Call to Arms
The war erupts, shattering the peace. Marylu and Daisy, driven by their ideals and loyalty, are called upon to join the fight, leaving their idyllic forest haven behind.
The air, once sweet with the scent of pine and damp earth, grew heavy. It was a change so subtle at first, like a whisper of frost on a summer's breeze, that we almost missed it. Daisy, her brow furrowed as she coaxed a shy violet to unfurl its petals, was the first to truly feel it. "The trees are restless, Marylu," she murmured, her fingers trailing over a moss-covered trunk. "They feel it too."
I, ever impatient, was already tracing patterns in the dust with my toe. "Feel what, Daisy? The usual squirrels plotting their acorn heist?" I grinned, but even as the words left my mouth, a shiver ran down my spine that had nothing to do with mirth. The birds, usually a riot of song, were unnervingly silent. The wind, which had always sung through the leaves like a friendly companion, now rustled with a low, mournful sigh.
Then it came. Not a whisper, but a roar. A tremor that shook the very roots of the ancient forest, a sound like a thousand thunderstorms colliding. The sky, a canvas of innocent blue moments before, was ripped open by jagged streaks of unnatural light. It wasn't the clean, crackling energy I commanded; this was dark, malevolent, like a bruise spreading across the heavens.
