Dreams of Heroism

The air in our little patch of forest always hummed with a quiet magic, a symphony of rustling leaves and chirping crickets that Daisy could coax into a chorus with a mere whisper. But lately, a different kind of hum had begun to thrum beneath my skin, a restless, crackling energy that mirrored the lightning I could summon. It was the hum of potential, of a future we were sketching out with every shared glance and whispered dream.

“Imagine it, Marylu,” Daisy would say, her eyes, the color of moss after a spring rain, alight with wonder. She’d be perched on a moss-covered log, a crown of wildflowers woven into her dark hair, her fingers tracing patterns in the air as if conjuring the very visions she spoke of. “We’d swoop in, right when the villains think they have the upper hand. You, a dazzling storm, and me, the guardian of the green. No one would dare harm a single soul.”

I’d grin, the electric current in my fingertips tingling with anticipation. “And I’d make sure they knew who was in charge, Daisy. A few well-placed bolts, and they’d be running for the hills faster than a startled rabbit.” I’d flex my hands, a small spark dancing between my fingers, a playful imitation of the power that still sometimes surprised me. It had been a shock, that first surge, a terrifying jolt when I’d been no older than seven, trying to rescue a stray kitten from a high branch. The branch had snapped, and in my panic, a blinding flash had erupted from me, a bolt of pure, raw energy that had brought the branch crashing down, kitten and all, into a pile of soft leaves. Daisy, who had been exploring nearby, had seen it all. Instead of fear, her eyes had held a curious awe, a recognition that had instantly bound us.
