Chapter 5
Forest Training Grounds
The two girls begin to meet regularly in the forest, practicing their powers. Marylu learns to control her electricity, while Daisy hones her control over flora, their friendship blossoming.
The forest became our sanctuary, a wild, breathing cathedral where the rustle of leaves was our liturgy and the dappled sunlight our stained glass. It was here, amidst the ancient oaks and whispering pines, that Daisy and I began to truly forge ourselves, not just as friends, but as something more. We were a secret, a promise whispered on the wind, practicing the strange, wonderful gifts that had bloomed within us.
Our meetings were as regular as the tides, as predictable as the sun’s arc across the sky. Every afternoon, after chores were done and the village quieted, we’d slip away, our hearts thrumming with anticipation. The path to our chosen clearing was an old deer trail, barely a whisper through the undergrowth, and it was there that our lessons began.
Daisy, with her serene grace, would arrive first, her presence a calming balm. She’d kneel by a patch of stubborn moss, her fingers tracing its velvety surface, and with a soft murmur, the moss would unfurl, stretching towards the light like a tiny, emerald carpet. She taught me patience, the quiet art of observation. “Everything has a voice, Marylu,” she’d say, her eyes sparkling with an understanding that seemed as old as the trees themselves. “You just have to learn to listen.”
