In quiet moments, Marylu grapples with guilt. She replays Daisy's final moments, questioning if she could have done something different, if Daisy's sacrifice was truly necessary.
The quiet moments were the worst. They clawed at me, sharp and insistent, when the roar of battle faded and the urgent shouts of the living were replaced by the silent, accusing stare of the dead. I’d find myself huddled in the corner of some abandoned shack, the smell of damp earth and decay clinging to everything, and my mind would drift, unbidden, back to the forest. Back to that day.
It was always the same scene, replaying like a broken music box. The sky, choked with the acrid smoke of burning buildings and the unnatural glow of villainous magic, was a bruised purple. The air thrummed with the desperate clash of powers, a symphony of destruction that had become the soundtrack to our lives. We were on the periphery, trying to flank the main assault, Daisy’s vines lashing out like protective whips, my own lightning crackling around my fists, ready to strike.
And then, I saw him. The Villain Leader. A silhouette against the inferno, radiating a chilling aura of pure malevolence. He was moving towards a cluster of civilians, those too stunned or too weak to flee, their faces etched with terror. Daisy saw him too. Her eyes, usually so bright and full of life, widened with a fierce, protective light.
