Chapter 4
Angels Descend
As the enemy closed in, celestial intervention occurred. Majestic angels appeared, their presence a beacon of hope. They guided our steps, shielding us from the darkness and strengthening our resolve.
The air crackled, not with static, but with a malice that clawed at the edges of our sanity. Shadows, once harmless companions to the fading light, now writhed with a life of their own, coiling around our heels like spectral serpents. I could feel the Enemy’s breath, a chilling miasma, growing closer, its icy tendrils seeking to snatch the warmth from our hearts. My wife, her face a mask of fierce determination, clutched our eldest child tighter, a silent plea in her eyes that mirrored the terror in my own soul. The eldest, usually so full of questions, was unnervingly quiet, their small body trembling against their mother’s side. We were cornered, the meager shelter of the gnarled oaks offering little solace against the encroaching darkness.
“They’re too close,” I whispered, my voice raspy, betraying the fear I tried so desperately to suppress. Every instinct screamed to run, to flee, but where? The path behind us was a memory, swallowed by the Enemy’s pursuit. The path ahead… that was a terrifying unknown, a black void promising only more terror. The Enemy’s whispers, insidious and vile, slithered into my mind, attempting to plant seeds of doubt, to erode the bedrock of my faith. *You are alone. You are weak. Your family is doomed.*
It was in that moment, as despair threatened to engulf me, that I remembered. A promise. A whisper from the heavens, a flicker of light in the deepest abyss. *“Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”* The words, once a comforting balm, now resonated with a new urgency, a desperate lifeline. I squeezed my eyes shut, focusing on that divine assurance, pushing back against the encroaching fear. I had to be strong. Not for myself, but for them. For my family. My wife’s hand found mine, her grip firm, a silent testament to her own unwavering spirit.
