Home, Changed and Grateful

Leo reunites with his overjoyed family and friends. The world is vibrant again, but Leo is forever changed. He cherishes every moment, every laugh, every breath, deeply grateful for life, love, and the courage he found within.

The familiar scent of Mum’s baking, a warm hug of cinnamon and sugar, filled the air. It was a smell I thought I’d only ever remember, a ghost of a joy in the frozen world. But here it was, real and vibrant, and Mum herself, her apron dusted with flour, was turning from the oven with a smile that could melt glaciers. And then, her eyes found mine. The smile hitched, then bloomed into something so wide, so full of disbelief and pure, unadulterated love, that my own chest felt ready to burst.

“Leo?” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. She dropped the oven mitts, and they landed with a soft thud on the checkered kitchen floor. Then she was rushing towards me, her arms outstretched. I ran too, meeting her halfway, burying my face in the comforting scent of her, the familiar scratch of her apron against my cheek. Her arms wrapped around me, tight and secure, and I heard her sob, a sound of pure relief.

“Oh, Leo, my boy, my darling boy,” she murmured, her voice muffled against my hair. “We thought… we thought…”
