He traced the carvings on the altar, each one a knot of interwoven vines and symbols that seemed to writhe under his touch. He had found it hidden beneath a loose flagstone behind the altar, a small, intricately carved wooden box. Inside, nestled on faded velvet, lay the artifact: a disc of obsidian, no larger than his palm, etched with a spiraling pattern that seemed to draw the light into its depths. As his fingers brushed its surface, a jolt, like a static shock, coursed through him, and for a fleeting moment, the hushed rustle of leaves and the distant murmur of voices filled the church, sounds that weren't there. He heard the creak of the heavy oak door behind him and spun around, his heart leaping into his throat.
